Power switch
In 1898 our village became one of the first in France to have electrical street lighting. A reservoir was built above the village and water was piped down to an electrical generator in the village. This valve was opened at dusk and closed at midnight. Details (in French) are here -

There is a story that an inhabitant from a neighbouring village turned up at the opening ceremony with a large barrel, hoping to fill it with electricity and take it home for bottling.
