Our local newspaper had an article recently about the various memorials to the dead of WW1 in this part of France. Some are militaristic, others patriotic, some are pacifist. This memorial at Céret is one of the latter, 'La Douleur' being translated as pain, suffering or grief. The sculptor was Aristide Maillol.
