I was doing the washing up some time ago and I noticed that this egg cup had a barely legible "Made in Romania" printed on its base. Its story came back to me. It was bought at a Christmas bazaar held at the local town hall in the Sixties. The bazaar was to raise money for a Left-wing newspaper my father supported, and I guess they got stuff to sell from then-Communist bloc countries. It was a reminder of my childhood and I took it as a souvenir when the family home was cleared after my mother's death years ago. I had really wanted an egg cup in the shape of a purple hippopotamus that I had often disputed with my brother and sister as children. True to form, one of them had got there first and taken it ! This was the consolation prize.
