Built to defend France from those devilish Aragonese (who ?), Carcassonne was beseiged by a Crusader army at the start of the 13th Century. It didn't look like this then. The fortress was restored from its ruins in the 19th Century, the architect having decided he could improve on the original. The gray slate roofs are typical of northern France; for example.
I've always admired these medieval-looking walls. Now that I've learned that it's just a reconstruction, I don't really want to go there anymore. Anyway, your shot is excellent.
Superb! A place I went every year for decades! While there is a lot of tourist shops in the fortress you can still visit the inside and the fences with a guide. Some Cassoulet restaurants used to be good...
I adore Carcassonne, even in its false reconstruction-ness. So many photo opportunities to be found. Fun fact: I almost got impaled by a flying patio umbrella during an extreme gust of wind there!
