Pickled red cabbage is not to be found in supermarkets here, so I make my own. The cabbage, vinegar and salt can be bought here, but the spices have to be smuggled in from the UK. And I do mean smuggled, post-Brexit bringing any foodstuff into the EU from the UK is fraught with difficulty. I like to think that my Londoner friend hid these somewhere that would not arouse the slightest interest from a French customs officer, perhaps a hollowed out copy of the Wisden cricketers almanac, or a book of Jamie Oliver's recipes.
In the news last week was an announcement that the British Post Offfice would be issuing a set of stamps to commemorate the 30th anniversary of a pop group, the Spice Girls. They must be famous because even I have heard of them. I remember Ginger Spice and her Union flag dress, and Sporty Spice with her karate kicks. Not sure which one was Pickling Spice though, perhaps the tall one that married a footballer.
