Trimley's claim to fame

This is on the Trimley St Martin village sign.
Sir Thomas Cavendish was an explorer and a privateer known as "The Navigator" because he was the first who deliberately tried to emulate Sir Francis Drake and raid the Spanish towns and ships in the Pacific and return by circumnavigating the globe..His first trip and successful circumnavigation made him rich from captured Spanish gold, silk and treasure from the Pacific and the Philippines.
Well thank you for posting this Lesley, I drive by the sign every single day and never realised this was there and certainly never knew the connection - Love 365, I'm always learning something!

@judithdeacon @678tabby Thank you both. Judith, I have walked past this sign many times and never noticed this until yesterday, I know about Thomas Cavendish because my kids did a lot on him when they were at Trimley school. The Three Mariners pub is also namewd for him and the three ships he took to the Azores with Sir Richard Grenville. Legend has it that the gun in Gun Lane was bought back on one of his expeditions but there are no facts to back it up.

Love this sign Lesley, thank-you for posting it. Do Grimston Hall and its oaks still exist? I know the name of Sir Richard Grenville from Tennyson's poem "The Revenge". History is fascinating.
