Not just a place but a very specific place and time. Whenever I hear this song, which is often as I have been a fan of Ray Davies since I was in my teens, I am immediately transported in time. It is the very hot summer of 1968 and I am in London staying in my Uncle Ted's Hampstead flat, whilst he is away. I am in the process of applying for a visa to travel to and spend an unspecified time in America. I made it to America in the October of that year and I stayed for a year before I became aware that although there was a lot that I loved and I made some great friends, I was far too European by nature to live happily in America and there was too much that I missed, London in high summer being just one of them.
