On my girlfriends and her grandchildrens list of things to do in Philadelphia last week was a visit to Pat's and Gino's and do a taste test. We headed to South Philly where they are located in a neighbor. They only have outdoor seating.
Pat's was started by two brothers and is credited with the creation of the Philly cheesesteak in 1933. Geno's was founded in 1966 and sits directly across the street. They are rivals in the Philly cheesesteak business.
Both had long lines that moved very quickly. Arline got in line at Gino's while I crossed the street and got in line at Pat's. Finding an empty table at Pat's we each purchased 2 cheese steaks and cut them in half to compare the taste. Pat's won our taste test.
I wouldn't say either was the best cheesesteak I have eaten but I loved the history and atmosphere surrounding them.
