It was only a few minute boat ride to our next Lighthouse. The Baltimore Harbor Lighthouse proved to be one of the more difficult tasks ever undertaken in the interests of establishing an aid to navigation in the United States. It was built 18 years after the initial $60,000 funding request in 1890. In 1902 Congress finally approved an additional $60,000 and bidding for the job opened in the spring of 1903. It was manned till 1923 when it was automated and no longer staffed. Automating lighthouses had bad repercussions. Maintenance was lax and vandalization happened often. It was put up for auction and in 2006 with a final bid of $260,000, a partnership of private citizens (four couples) won the bid and are committed to the preservation and restoration of this lighthouse.
I chose this view to show off the lighthouse bathroom. That cast-iron structure resembling a guard shack is cantilevered over the water. Why you ask? Well, the toilet has no plumbing.
great looking lighthouse. i like it. aces! the bathroom made me smile. good thing it's not habited or the water would be polluted with you know what. i have ambition to go around michigan state and photograph the lighthouses, all 100+ of them.
@summerfield we saw 11 lighthouses in 12 hrs. I need to look up how many Maryland has.... you better start soon I think it's going to take you forever.... LOL
Another great shot. I never thought about bathrooms on a lighthouse. My husband used to work at a plant (long gone) on the Baltimore harbor. Wish I'd been more interested in the harbor and places like this lighthouse.
