This weathervane sets atop a bank in Gorham, NH. It is a log driver. Men used to float logs down rivers to their destinations, typically paper mills. This area of NH no longer has active mills, the populations have decreased from 200,000 to 15,000 in the past 80-100 years....paper supported them all. Dozens of churches no longer have parishoners and hundreds of homes are empty. Yet, the pride of the past remains showing direction in the wind.
@digitalrn True Rick but the infrastructure is dated so travel to the area itself is difficult. Some tourism is trying to upstart and much to everyone's shagrin placement of both a state and federal prison.
Fabulous capture. Sadly, the paper industry is taking a hit, probably because everything is online today. My father-in-law worked in a paper mill for 40 years and my husband used to work in the corrugated container industry (OK, they made boxes LOL!). If the paper mill at my in-laws ever closes, it would devastate the area, as it is the major employer in the entire region, even though it doesn't make half the paper or employ half the people it used to. Sad.
