Today we made an impromptu visit to a pioneer village that shows life in Upper Canada in the 1820s. This woman was using a walking spinning wheel to spin sheep wool into thread. The wheel is called a walking wheel because the spinner is continually walking back and forth to keep tension on the yarn. Pioneer women could walk up to twenty miles a day from corner to corner in their cabins while spinning their yarn.
My sister used to spin wool- but she had the smaller kind you sat at. I was more interested dyeing the wool than spinning it. Love this shot- a step back in time.
