A dilapidated tobacco kiln seen from the trail. The kilns were once used to dry and cure the tobacco. Most of the tobacco farms now produce soybeans or ginseng, and those still growing tobacco have larger, modern drying houses. The old kilns are left to fall into disrepair.
Great black and white! There was a photographer several years ago, who went around capturing all the old tobacco smoke houses and share croppers shacks around South Carolina. Then published one of those big coffee table books with all those wonderful shots. Just a thought... He documented a big piece of history.
