These 'sour figs' are the dried fruit of a succulent ground cover (Carpobrotus edulis). I have planted lots of it in the garden last year as they are very drought-resistant. Very pleased that I now have my own crop of it as it is not readily available in shops. The inside consists of a salty sour-sweet jam-like substance with lots of little seeds in it. An acquired taste ;).
February 2024: Posting now and again...
January 2023: Took a break, but miss needing to be on the lookout for something beautiful. So let's start again...
@etienne Hi Etienne, if the fruit are very dry and hard, you can soak them in water overnight or however long it takes, to soften them (which then makes the contents juicier).
@lmsa Thanks for the tip, I will try when I will be back in Brittany. I am currently using these plants as ground cover and for their decorative flowers.
