This Kansas region is named for the abundant residual flint rock that eroded from the bedrock that lies either on or just below the surface. It is a distinct region because it has the most dense coverage of intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Due to the rocky soil early settlers were unable to plow the area, resulting in the predominance of cattle ranches, which benefit from the tallgrass prairie. This ranch was doing a controlled burn of their land. The smoke was visible for miles.
I always think of sunflowers when I think of Kansas. The time I drove through it we saw them for miles. Interesting to learn that there's more to Kansas than the sunflowers! Good shot.
