The VFW is the oldest and largest war veteran service organization in America. This is Post 10454 in Grapevine, the closest one to our home. At this time the VFW’s are the only place available to take tattered American flags. They keep them until they have 100, then they hold the proper flag disposal ceremony and burn them. Most of them have discarded military equipment in front. This post had this US Army mounted heavy artillery gun in front of its building. Jerry was the Commander of our local VFW many years ago, it closed in the late 1990’s. The posts have bars and many have kitchens and serve food, they have pool tables and dart games, they are good places for the veterans to gather and reminisce.
The closest VFW to us is a rather plain structure that hosts bingo. I’m not sure about any other activities. We have a local flag sore that recycled our old flags years ago.
@k9photo I think they each kind of do their own thing. Jerry was involved long before we married so I’m just going by what he has said. We do have friends on the east coast who are very involved with their posts, lavish meals and car shows, even slot machines, lol.
The town I grew up in had a very active VFW right on the main street. I'm not sure where it is in my current town but I do know there is one. Aside from the entertainment value, I really think they are an anchor for service people who need to know someone who understands what they've gone through. Great collage!
jerry was involved in the Korean war but not the second world war, do i get it right? it would be interesting if he and the first mr. summerfield had known each other.
you guys do a lot for your vets. i don't know if we do enough for ours here.
