The #1 British Flight Training School in Texas for WWII

There’s a small town in East Texas that was the sight of the first RAF pilot training school in America. A couple of local actors presented the story to my book club this week. By the time America joined the war in December 1941, there were 9 pilot training schools across the country that ultimately trained 2,000 pilots for the war.
Amazing collage and such an interesting narrative.

It sounds like it was such an entertaining presentation. I love the way you have told the story with this collage.

@dide those actors were amazing! Stars just have a way of presenting their work that makes you follow every word, nearly every woman in the club said they were going to buy the book or try to find it at the library.

That sounds like a great time with the book club! Did you read Flygirl
by Sherri L. Smith? Nadya loved it when she was in Middle or High School and it now lives on Yelena's bookshelf!

My father went to a Texas flight school when he was in the military. He was also born and raised in Texas. Unfortunately, the students in my father's class flunked out so the instructor must have been awful. Still my father was transferred to an airport in Santa Monica, California and that is what brought him out west! He fell in love with the area and settled down after finishing his 4 years. He had 4 sisters and only one left Texas years later.

@gardenfolk there was a flight school in Sweetwater, Texas that opened shortly after this one in Terrell. I don’t know if there were any more. I’m pretty sure your father didn’t learn to fly at Terrell, they had a super high graduation rate.
