I know these as 'bottlebrush' flowers (having lived in CA myself many years ago). They look like fireworks on a stem!
Lois, thanks for telling me about your sister and her life-long cello experience. Funny about you choosing the flute after watching your sister lug her cello around. I too wanted to play the flute as a grade-schooler because of how petite the case was! (My mom had a clarinet so that's what I played in band.) Amazing that your sister took her cello along on a Europe trip. Obviously she LOVED her cello dearly.
