Pomegranates ripen in paper bags

I have not idea why they need this protection, but all plantations have them in paper bags right after blooming.

According to Mr Google, pomegranate bagging ensures the cleanliness of the fruit surface, solves the problems of pests and diseases and improves the yield and quality of the fruit. Without bagging there will be pitting, water stains, black mould and insect damage.

I have seen Pomegranates grow in the Mediterranean but never with bags.

We had a pomegranate tree in our garden when we lived in Cyprus, but never put bags around the fruit. Kathy's explanation makes sense though. @kjarn
