Like many other Australian native plants, especially Eucalypts, they do much better overseas than they do in Australia because of the absence of the natural insect predators that munch on them over here
I see these in Florida too although the color is a bit different from this very bright red. You really get a sense of the bristly texture from your image.
@ludwigsdiana Very common in our country. In spring you can buy them a lot.
