Yup, our squirrels are snow covered now! Yours is an adorable capture with that snow hat. I have a question about the corn feeder. I bought the kind that's about 6 ears of corn smashed into one shape, but yours looks like ears of corn dried out. Do the squirrels eat one kernel at a time like in this photo or do they nibble straight off the cob? How long does one cob last?
@jyokota Hi Junko, first I want to say that I love your squirrel pictures! The feeders we have are called cob feeders. There is a screw sticking up that we push one ear of dried field corn down on. The squirrels pick one kernel off at a time and sit and eat it. Most squirrels only eat part of the kernel. I read that they eat the embryo and leave the endosperm, which is mostly starch. The wild rabbits clean up the leftovers. When the weather is terribly cold like now (1 degree today) several squirrels come and they can eat the whole ear in one day. We usually have 4 ears out at once. When it's nice weather, an ear can last a week or more.
