United Kingdom by maggiemae

United Kingdom

These are the routes that my Mother took in 1929 all around the UK! I took the names from her diary and spent hours putting them into Google Maps then found it wasn't saving them properly, tried Google Earth but couldn't find how, finally into Mapquest. That also was a fiddly job and I had no help file. However it is now completed and totals 27122.25 miles!

She arrived at Tilbury Docks on 7th July and was back in London at the beginning of October 1929
What an impressive journey! Well done you for tracing your mother's footsteps - so fascinating!

What a fantastic journey and something I would live to do.
January 20th, 2013
holy cow! she really traveled! that is impressive... good job mapping it out... it's really so interesting!
January 20th, 2013
That is a long way, how did your mother travel?
January 20th, 2013
What a grat journey she was on
January 20th, 2013
Wow-She had quite the journey! She really explored a great deal of the UK.
January 20th, 2013
@gphelps5 She and her sister bought a 1928 Morris Oxford, an open tourer (convertible)!
January 20th, 2013
brilliant shot - you put lots of love into the project ~
January 20th, 2013
What a brilliant memory and classic car.
January 20th, 2013
Utterly incredible! Such an unusual and brave thing for two unaccompanied women to do in those days
January 20th, 2013
WOW!!! You have really done the most tremendous job!!! And she really had quite the trip!
January 20th, 2013
Jan is right.... back in those days I shouldn't think it was something women often did..... well done your Mum and well done you for so painstakingly plotting and charting her travels.
January 20th, 2013
Cool
January 20th, 2013
fantastic. Fancy following in her footsteps?
January 20th, 2013
@doodlerdeb Love to - some of the hotels she stayed in are still around- pretty historic!
January 20th, 2013
The map is great. I think your mum saw more of GB than 99% of Brits - 99.9% in 1929. You need to come over and fill in Norfolf for her!
January 20th, 2013
@judithg I think she went to Norfolk on a later trip - much later! She had relatives there!
January 20th, 2013
Wow - I think that your Mother visited more places around the coast of Britain than I have and I have lived here all my life!
January 20th, 2013
@emmadurnford Certainly more than me! .....and she stayed in London the second time for 10 weeks and saw so much!
January 20th, 2013
@maggiemae Well you can still come ;0)
January 20th, 2013
I've always dreamed of hiring a campervan and touring right round the coast of Scotland, but that seems pretty unambitious now after seeing what your mum did!
January 20th, 2013
@judithg Have to save up first - 6 months travelling, staying in hotels???
January 20th, 2013
That's an incredible journey - other than East Anglia & N. Ireland she pretty much had the UK covered !
January 20th, 2013
@maggiemae Just work your way round 365ers!
January 20th, 2013
Your Mum has been to more places than most people in the UK & this map is a wonder!
January 20th, 2013
@happypat Thanks Pat - it isn't what I really wanted - a finer line would be better. Individual areas are going to go in the right chapters for the book I'm transcribing from the diary.
January 20th, 2013
How interesting, what an amazing would she must be..
January 20th, 2013
Oh, Maggiemae that is just so very cool. What an amazing trip she has had. GREAT JOB marking it all on the map.
January 20th, 2013
@yonnie I had to do it in stages as the Mapquest would only take 26 at one time (alphabet). Good to get it finished and saved Yvonne!
January 20th, 2013
@maggiemae I can only imagine how long it took to complete, Maggiemae.
January 20th, 2013
You are Brilliant Maggie, tracing your mother all that way round our wonderful Island.
January 20th, 2013
Wow!!!!! ! That's a really long way!!!!
January 20th, 2013
Wow fantastic route!
January 20th, 2013
Doing this, making it tangible and "seeing" your mom's journeys is wonderful, creative and touching.
January 20th, 2013
That is very impressive- both that your mother traveled so far, and that you took the time to map it out!
January 20th, 2013
Wow, what a journey! And very brave for two young ladies back in the 20's!
January 20th, 2013
@kwiksilver They were told that then by many but didn't think they were brave at all!
January 20th, 2013
You are mapping your family history! How neat!
January 20th, 2013
Now that is outstanding... she really did see it all
January 20th, 2013
Wow quite a trek!
January 20th, 2013
Impressive mapping by you and impressive journey by your mother.
January 21st, 2013
That was a lot of work! But it was worth it! Your mother must have been so amazing!
January 21st, 2013
Amazing road journey in a car for that era!
January 21st, 2013
@asutherland1964 I think so too - they had to get the brake adjusted often and fix a few punctures but thats all! Mum wrote that at one hill the car was being very slow and just couldn't make the hill - then she found she had the hand brake on!
January 21st, 2013
Hi Maggiemae! Nice to see you again. Looks like you are investing top notch efforts in this coming book! What incredible detail and effort. You Mum would be proud.

What a seasoned traveler your mum was. Does it feel like you're taking the journey beside her as you read her diary?
January 21st, 2013
@lesip It certainly does, Leslie! I have to google a lot for information about spelling and name places and Ive learnt so much as well as being fascinated!
January 21st, 2013
What a wonderful project within a project you undertook with this! Great shot. It looks like she came near where I live, Worcester (though I actually live in Droitwich Spa)
January 21st, 2013
@hasselhotch She did go through Worcester just to check for mail but also went through Broadway which she loved!
January 21st, 2013
Broadway is beautiful and I took a photo of broadway tower at sunrise at the beginning of this month.
January 21st, 2013
