Reiuctant to leave a beautiful calm water scene on a prospective sun filled day but we did. Kerikeri was our business and a lunch stop. Looking out from the restaurant where we had locally processed meat, cheeses and home made bread and pickles, this was an inlet the extends far inland. These two youngsters were on the jetty in front of us. John remembered when we owned a small trailer sailer
over 35 years ago, and anchored here, I rowed into the steps, staggered and fell into the water together with his splendid 1970’s camera! It didn’t survive but maybe might have with the technology of rice and warm ovens!
Three good things:
1. Avocados and kiwi fruit are available on the side of the road!
2. Met a guy in Russell after another car ferry trip who owned a new Indian Motorbike - the “Vintage” His bike was much admired by all who walked by (sold him 2 books!)
3. On the waterfront the scene was International - restaurants opening up on to the road , historic buildings and information, sun going down in a blaze of glory!
Doing what boys do. They are completly sbsorbed in their task. Reading your book and thinking of your Mum driving down Oxford street after a few lessons.. Its a different world now
A lovely scene.. It's great being able to buy avo's for $2 a bag at the moment.. and so much better than the shops.. I am pleased you did not take your currant camera for a swim..
Love everything about this wonderfully ' Tom Sawyer' type photo.......looks rather old fashioned & so much nicer than looking at boys with their modern electronic gear! The hats are just the icing on the cake! You have a great eye!
Love, love, love this. It takes me back to when the girls were young nd thir dad taught them to fish. The best day of all was him showing them how to use a jam jar. All the rods and reels were left by kids curious to see another way. Their absorption and the reflection fab.
@ceilidh Are you referring to @kelly2 's remark? If so - it was a book I have just published about my mothers travels in Britain in 1929 taken from her diaries!
Lovely capture, I hope their family is close as I would be worried about young children and water, that's what comes in being an ex-Health and Safety Officer.
Wonderful capture, and excellent processing....love the feeling of sunny innocence conveyed here! What a funny story about you falling into the water with the camera (I am sure it was not that funny back then!)....I am sure no drinking was involved! ;-))
@panthora It was over 35 years ago but I'm sure you are right - I had to manoevre a dinghy too and tie it up while holding the camera so it was inevitable I suppose!
This is so awesome on so many levels. Memories, reflections, 2 little boys playing together, fishing and talking, the jetty, the freedom of childhood.... I rave but also fave this image.
