There’s a choice NZer’s have to make at this time. Whether to keep the Union Jack flag with its naval blue background, Union Jack and four stars, or change to one that has a silver fern on it. I photographed this flag which flies over the top of the Oamaru Harbour at all times and noticed it was red1 Google told me it was the New Zealand Red Ensign shown on all Merchant ships since 1901!
Frankly, I would hate to see this changed.
Three good things:
1. A 365’er coming to my neck of the woods!
2. I’m getting to like reading a book every few days.
3. One day its 30 degC the next its 12deg max! Good thing we didn’t put our winter clothes away!
I am in 2 minds - I am not rapt by the new proposed design but I would like a change if only to distinguish us from our cuzzies across the ditch. The fern with the red background made a better flag I thought, but it was never going to be selected under a National Party government!
I just love the vibrant blue of the water and the contrast of that bright red flag against it. Great shot! It will be interesting to see what happens next with the design.
I cant really say. not knowing what the new flag looks like, this one has wonderful bold color and is flown proudly from what I see. nice picture with the those sailboats. .
This is beautiful; such a wonderful colorful scene! I like this flag, but then I haven't seen the others ...I am pretty sure that I would just want to keep them all!
Beautiful shot, beautiful composition, beautiful colours beautiful calm waters. I would prefer to have my own flag without the Union Jack but it is for your people to decide. There are several cities in North Africa and others called Rabat. As far as I know Rabat is the Arabic word for suburb. So wherever there was a small city with a large suburb must have got the name of Rabat. We have another Rabat in Malta - both Rabats where suburbs of the main city during Arabic occupation of Malta in the tenth century.
This flag does look good against the blue water. What's going on with the NZ flag reminds me of when Canada got its maple leaf flag back in 1965, when Lester B. Pearson was our PM (and a very good one, I think). It's possible to combine having a flag which doesn't include the Union Jack, with continued recognition of the monarchy, as is the case here in Canada. Hope things work out satisfactorily in NZ.
