News for the aged

Now this is the Retirement Building Project that is being built on top of the hill where the old Oamau Hospital was. Incredible views over the town and eastern sea!
I did a holiday job here while I was at University and got my tonsils out here at the age of 19!
The hospital has been demolished.
Now this project is going to be very successful as the first stage is sold out.

Three good things;
1. I don’t think I want to end my days here in spite of the views. But…….
2. The villas are quite expensive and our property here is much better exceptI don’t have a button to push on the wall if I fall down the toilet at 2am!
3 As long as I can put my socks on, standing on one leg, I think I’m OK!
Big business these retirement villages .. and great for the single elderly that just need the secruity ... you are doing well if you can put socks on while standing on one leg..

@julzmaioro This village is not privately owned but run by our Council which is different!

That's the spirit Maggie, no giving in yet! Nice to know that it's an option if necessary though!

@happypat Yes, it is Pat if you need help doing daily tasks or have lost the plot!

Great shots!

Even though they're self-contained in a lot of ways, equivalent accommodation in the UK has an element of communal living which I wouldn't feel comfortable with.
The dwellings look promising, though, and do at least have the benefit of good views. I guess that's a small compensation.

Bep
I absolutely agree with your #3. But if necessary...
May 11th, 2017
@dulciknit With a high standard of health, the communal living would be OK - its the one where you see all these old people sitting in easy chairs all round the wall with their mouths open - that I couldn't bear! I expect if I'm doing that sort of thing, I wouldn't be aware to bear!

@maggiemae No, I wouldn't like that, either. I have a feeling that some of that trance-like state you describe is because staff don't provide enough occupational and mental stimulation for the residents.

Lovely processing

We have got too much stuff to ever be able to move into a retirement village.

Cool shots!

Nice shots of the construction. It sounds like a delightful place but I'm certain as long as you can do your socks like that you will be fine where you are

Cool image

@onewing Well, nows the time to reduce all the clutter! Sell it all and take a cruise with the proceeds?
May 12th, 2017
@grammyn It will be modern and very comfortable - for those that have the money and need! In my home, no-one ever tells me to pull my socks up!
May 12th, 2017
Neat shots of the construction...#3 Indeed :)
May 12th, 2017
@seattlite Give it a try, Gloria!
May 12th, 2017
from the little I have heard of NZ aged care...you seem to do it better than most.
May 12th, 2017
Lovely shots, sounds delightful with views included..You are doing so well, Maggiemae if you can put your socks on standing on one leg !!!!!!! That I can't do...Ha-Ha...
May 12th, 2017
What's the secret with the sock thing? This will be a welcome home for many I'm sure.
May 12th, 2017
Uh oh...I can't put my socks on while standing on one leg! I hear you loud & clear however! I think we baby-boomers are going to get a lot of special attention!
May 12th, 2017
The thought of being reliant on someone else to look after us is everyone's dread I think, but would hate to be a burden to my children.... not thinking about it for now!

Looks a beautiful development and for some would be ideal - we hope to stay where we are for quite awhile - but we never know what is. around the corner -

Looks like an attractive setting. As we age our needs are less and our abilities also diminish. There's a good bit more to living in a retirement village than just an emergency call button. The operator takes care of the maintenance of the unit and looks after the gardens. The arrangement removes any concern while absent on trips away.
May 13th, 2017
@tonydebont I do agree, Tony - the unit is looked after. A big plus is your windows are cleaned 4 times a year!!
May 13th, 2017
@maggiemae It just doesn't get any better 8-)
May 13th, 2017
@tonydebont So good to hear the positives, Tony!

It looks like it's going to be a lovely place. Hope the people who move in are able to appreciate the surroundings.

Our village is in the finishing throes of constructing circa 18 homes x 2 bed homes for 1/2 autonomous persons. They are specially designed to provide space to accommodate wheelchairs, move about without rocking on your heels to turn around, garage, minimum garden and are situated approx 100m from the Retirement Home. The RH is.specially designed for those who need nursing and/or palliative care and meals and is staffed 24/7. The autonomous neighbours have the choice to eat
balanced meals, if they wish, in the Residential Home for a reasonable sum. I can testify to all of this as I am and have been for some years, a member of the Management Committee. IMHO I find that planning, care, accommodation of older residents is highly valued and effective in this neck of the woods.

@s4sayer Its really big business here in NZ Margo! You have to go on a waiting list to get one of these accommodation units.
