After a lovely fragrant cup of coffee in the local cafe called, “The Wrinkly Ram”-(very apt as we saw lots of them) we set off for Mt Cook. Not expecting much having viewed the latest cloudy forecast, I was immensely pleased when we saw that magnificent mountain in front of us with no clouds!
Three good things;
1. There was a camping site right up there amongst the mountains. No dump site, no electricity but the magic of the mountains was all round!
2. Parked amongst dozens of other camper vans but by 8pm they were almost all gone! We had the scene to ourselves. Watched pink appear in the clouds overhead and wondered what they would be like in the morning when the sun appeared over the mountains.
3. Walked up to a memorial there - dozens of plaques dedicated to young men who have lost their lives in this area since the 1940’s! So sad but these guys were determined. Avalanches and falls meant some of them would never return.
Really a beautiful scene with the contrasting blue and dark tones. When I was on Mt Cook, we couldn't see a foot in front of us. We ended up leaving early and it was a good thing as we were one of the last cars to be able to get by before they had to close the road!
I recognise this road I'm sure but we went in the summer. Alex & Will drive us along here to Lake Pukaki & the Mount Cook base I'm sure. Isntbthat just a gorgeous sight! Big fave for the memories, we don't stop at the The Wrinkly Ram but went on to Twizzel & stopped there.
