Trousers. by maggiemae

Trousers.

If the sky is cloudy but a break appears, the blue is described as "enough - or "not enough" dependent on size - to make a pair of “sailor's trousers” .

The basics of the story is that two little children wanted to play outside, and their Nanny said that maybe they could after lunch. But, it was quite cloudy, so they were worried it would rain before then. So, their Nanny told them that if there's enough blue sky to make a sailor a pair of trousers, the day would be nice. So, the children looked and saw a patch of blue, which their Nanny took a good look at, and announced that it was enough to make a small sailor a pair of trousers and that the day would be nice. Sure enough, by the afternoon it was beautiful and sunny with barely a cloud in the sky.

Now this often happens, and I never forget this tale!
To be thankful for:
A cheerful young lady at the checkout at the supermarket who actually made me feel more cheerful!
Wow it’s a long time since I heard that saying but we use to say that all the time as kids! Thanks for reminding me.... a cheerful smile does wonders for our mood! A smile cost nothing!

My mum used this saying all the time and we never really knew what it meant! Thanks for clearing that one up! I do like it when people smile back especially when I have said good morning as I walk the dogs. It’s surprising how many people ignore you! So rude!

What a great old wives tale. I love it!

@pamknowler I think people ignore others because they don't want to get into a long conversation.

A new story to me as well, but a great one. Nothing better to cheer one up than a smile from a stranger :-)
