This is the Gulbenkian Museum, one of the world's great museums and one of Europe's unsung treasures. Part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, it houses a magnificent collection of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian, and European art. It was substantially renovated and modernized in 2001 (many of its masterpieces were on display in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art during renovation), and can't be missed during a visit to Lisbon. This is one of the world's finest private art collections, amassed over a period of 40 years by oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, who was one of the 20th century's wealthiest men. In his later years he adopted Portugal as his home, and donated all of his stupendous art treasures to the country when he died in 1955 at the age of 86.
Seen from our hotel window. A must go!
That is totally VAST! It must be a day trip out and take your lunch. It dwarfs the other buildings. You are having great fun taking these shots aren't you., and they are all fabulous.
@callymazoo I took the photo then researched what it was, Cally! Finding out about it makes me really keen to visit! It may rain tomorrow so it would be a good time!
good lord! i thought it was a miniature! great details you captured here, even the reflections of the city. wow! your photo's worth to be hanging in that museum, too! i love it!
The layers of colour here are amazing......the really colourful houses in the bottom....then the massive museum with all the reflections in the windows & on top of that the little peak of buildings peeking over the top! What a stupendous view!, I think Ireland & the UK have much to live up to!! Fave!
The colors, the sunset reflecting in those rows of windows, the contrast between that huge building vaguely reminiscent of a Greek temple and the red tile roofed smaller buildings surrounding it.....just wonderful!! Lisbon has certainly given you some great photo opportunities! Have been enjoying your travels through your photographic eye!
