@netkonnexion - I am probably going to give you more information than you want or need... LOL - it is a machine that makes white noise - sounds like there is a fan on in the room without the air blowing. It has multiple uses. Great for babies, helps them sleep because it mimics the sounds they hear in the womb and drowns out exterior noises like construction, cars, trains, etc. I travel with it so that I sleep better in hotels or other people's homes. We have found that our dog sleeps better (and we do as a result) of her not hearing every noise outside - like deer or other animals - however she can still smell them if windows are open.
It also has two speeds and multiple adjustments to make the sound deep or higher in pitch. You can get them at Bed Bath and Beyond or on Amazon. Price around $50. Our last one lasted16 years.- bought it when we were living near the train tracks by the University of Oregon - and it was stolen when someone decided they wanted my overnight bag in the back of our SUV during a football game. So, it never stopped working - just had to replace it.
