Apparently this is not terribly uncommon. I saw another a few years ago. Explanations seem to be molt, mites, some other illness, or a combination. Here's a link to more information.

We had a female cardinal a few years ago with not a single tail feather. I have never seen a bald one tho'. Very interesting read. Thanks.
