WORLD BOOK DAY by markp

WORLD BOOK DAY

I had a plan for today, I was heading out in search of some different species of bird. On the way I used my knowledge of the area and cut down the lanes, as it is much shorter that way than sticking to the main roads. I was listening to the radio about World Book Day, as I passed the signs for here. Now I have cycled past here many, many times, each time saying I must call in there one day.
I decided World Book Day was a good day to stop and have a look.
Okay, so why is a shot of the Cheshire countryside in March suitable for World Book Day ?
Well this is the site of a parsonage which burnt down in 1884. It is where a certain Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born in 1832, not know the name ?
How about Lewis Carroll ?
Author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass.

The black frame work in the centre covers a still flooded well, to supply the house with water. Between the trees is another arch, facing south west , which marks the front door. The black fencing basically shows the size of the house, inset into the grass are bricks showing the layout of the rooms.
Although it does look fairly big, it had to house his parents, the ten children, the servants, and his father took in boarders to teach them languages. In a census from 1840s, 19 people were living here !

The site is near Daresbury Village, just outside Runcorn.
Very interesting !! Great subject for Book Day. Lovely photo.
