Right at the very top north west corner of Westray in the Orkney Islands are some very high cliffs with a light house on top. Beneath these are two low flattened tidal rocky islands. They appear to have been left very smooth after a constant battering from the Atlantic breakers. I don't think there is anything to the west of here till you hit the Canadian coast.
While I was there, there was a smallish swell washing up onto the sides of these rocks. In these crystal clear waters a group of about 12 Grey Seals were playing.
As the large wave with white breaking surf approached the rock, the seals would dive into the wave and as if surfing, would ride the wave up on to the rocks. As all the water receded, and began to pour off the rocks, the seals turned and let the water carry them off and back into the sea.
It looked great fun and they appeared to be enjoying themselves, if I'd had my wetsuit with me and I knew there were no strong currants, I would have been very tempted to join them.
I watched them for the best part of two hours and they didn't appear to be looking for food, just having fun.
I think there will be more of these seals in the coming days.
