SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE by markp

SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE

At least without visible fire. This was the smoke from a factory fire in Widnes on Thursday evening. It was a very large fire, this was taken from Asda's carpark, (owned by Walmart), and is over a mile from the seat of the fire.
The factory is Saffil, and ironically it produces insulating materials, including a virtually indestructible material used in car airbags, catalytic converters and even the heat resistant tiles used on the American Space Shuttles.
After a previous fire which destroyed a warehouse, and all the shelving inside, the sheets of product were all neatly stacked on the floor were they had dropped to after the shelving collapsed. They were black but otherwise unharmed.
As far as I know, nobody was injured during the fire, which was brought under control by 15 fire engines and crews.

Don't mean to be alarmist but can't help wondering what was in the black cloud of smoke and hoping you were upwind from it.

@gardencat @dawnee Thank you very much Joanne and Dawn, yes it probably full of lovely toxic and very noxious, poisonous chemicals. Fortunately the wind took it out over the quite wide marsh and river area, in the direction of Runcorn. Hopefully by the time it got over to the other side of the river, it was either high enough up, or dispersed not to cause any problems over there.
