Okay, Something Old is the remains of an old Mersey Flat about to be swallowed by the rising tide on the River Mersey. A Mersey Flat was a flat bottomed cargo boat specially built to be able to navigate the shallow waters of the river. This one used to be called the Eustace Carey.
Something New, look closely and you might be able to see a temporary bridge out by the cranes, this leads out to what is going to be the the Widnes leg of the New Mersey Gateway bridge. It is being built to relieve the traffic on our existing bridge.
Something Blue, take your pick, lovely blue winter sky, or its reflection in the river.
Something Borrowed, must admit this is a bit of a stretch but I would imagine that those cranes are probably on hire, for the duration of the works, technically borrowed.
This was taken from the Widnes side of the river, looking up stream, from Spike Island.
This leads me to my next bit, I have had an idea that during my travels this year I intend to visit as many islands around the British Isles as I can do in 12 months.
Although Spike Island which borders the River Mersey, is only cut off from the main land by the St Helens Canal, it is still just an Island and as such counts as number 1 on this years list.
@maggiemae Thanks Maggiemae, those cooling towers are part of Fiddlers Ferry power station and have appeared several times in my 365 project. A few weeks ago I was on the opposite side of the river photographing the power station before it disappears behind the new bridge, I got talking to someone who had come down to see how the work was progressing on the new bridge. Apparently, in the 1960s his first job after university was to help build the power station, it had a design life of 25 years and is still going strong after 40 years.
Good job too, he reckons it makes nearly 10%of UK electricity !
