A LIFEBOAT

ISLAND HOPPING Day - Two

After a very hearty Scottish breakfast, I had time to have a quick look around the southern end of the Isle of Gigha. Located off the west coast of Kintyre, Gigha is only a small island, about six miles long and about a mile and a half at its widest part. Its highest mountain ( probably not the right term), is a majestic 330 feet high.
The population is around 160 residents.
Previously owned through the years by various private landlords, in 2002 the islanders managed to buy the island, and now own it through the Gigha Heritage Trust.

One of the attractions on the island is the renown Achamore Gardens, a large collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, collected by Sir James Horlick, co inventor of the the Horlicks drink.

Caught the ferry off the island to Tayinlooan on the mainland, a quick very scenic drive up to Kennacraig, to catch the MV Finlagan to take me over to the Isle of Islay. Arrived in Port Askraig, Islay and joined the queue for the ferry over to the Isle of Jura. The ferrymen were struggling a bit because the normal small ferry was out of service and had been replaced with an even smaller boat. Instead of the scheduled time, they were just whizzing back and forth as quickly as they could. They were squeezing the vehicles on as tightly as possible, to fit on as many as they could. So tightly in fact that I could not get out of the car, if you had started to sink I would have had to climb out of a window to get out. Fortunately that did not happen and a few minutes later safely arrived on the Isle of Jura.
What an awesome place that is.

This bright Lifeboat is onboard the MV Finlagan, I used to get to Islay.
