@helenhall Thank you again, Helen for another of your lovely and interesting comments, they are always welcomed. If you look carefully at the carbon brush to the right of the image, you might be able to see inscribed upon it X72. That is the size of the brush required if they were ever to wear away.

@markp I see. My mental picture of what a brush looked like was obviously hampering my understanding of the motor components. Now I have learned something.
