This is a, ( take a deep breath), the Final Instar Nymph of a Hawthorne Shieldbug (Acanthsoma haeorrhoidae).
Young and very small Shieldbugs emerge from their eggs as First Instar Nymphs, as they grow, they cast off their outer skins and emerge again slightly larger and very often a different colour and appearance to their previous one. Given there are quite a few different Shieldbugs, all with different Instar stages this gives a very wide variety to try and identify.
However I am pretty sure I am right with this one.
He is only about 1/2 inch, 13mm long, but the next time he sheds his skin he will be fully grown.
Amazing macro shots. Can i ask a question? I have a canon t3i and want to take macro shots this close. Is there a lens for the mild cost of about $250 that I could use to get closer to these shots? Would appreciate any help.
