Down at the south end of Hoy, sits this old cottage, I would love to know the story behind it.
Normally if you renovate one of these old buildings, they are gutted and then re-roofed, then fitted out. The garden is left till the cottage is habitable and someone moves in and sorts it out.
Here someone has mown the grass to start a lawn, dug the garden and planted a selection of plants, flowers and vegetables. There are a few pots and planters as well. Inside there is a gazebo and a wooden garden shed.
Outside is a very nice wooden bench with a plaque stating...

Mark, please take this constructive critique with a pinch of salt if you wish, but I must point out that, although I think the shot itself is great you have over processed it. The view through the window seem not to fit in with the background and the greens are too vibrant.
@gamelee Thank you for your comments Lee, and yes its fine to point things out. Yes I probably have over processed it a bit, but I was trying to pull out the colours of the flowers and the stones, it was a horrible wet gloomy morning, and the greens have come out a bit bright.
However the pinkish/brown colour through the window and doorway is the gazebo that had been put up inside the house. The blue and vertical grey you can see through the doorway, is actually the garden shed, also built inside the house.
Yes, I have been doing this trip on my own again, I can do what I want that way. You do meet some interesting people though, particularly on the ferries. Today I met a lady who is relief manager for the museum in Lyness, met her twice today going to and from work. Strangely although she is not always working there, I also met her last year as well on the boat. Also had interesting conversations with a botanist/ conservation expert, a Police woman who admitted her job is very easy up there, a Marine Mammal Pathologist, two old ladies from Glasgow who had a fabulous day thanks to the staff on the ferry, and an American girl I met coming back from North Ronaldsay, who I spent a couple of days travelling with.
If you get back up there the islands are definitely worth seeing, my own favourites are probably, Sanday, Papa Westray and Hoy.
