SPIDER AND "FRIEND"

I don't think I have ever seen this before, it is a Harvestman Spider. When I first saw him, I saw the red on his leg, I thought oh he's bleeding. With hindsight I am not sure spiders have red blood.

However, a closer look revealed that it was not blood, it is in fact a very small tick type creature.

No doubt small in our eyes, but looks quite large in relation to the size of the spider. Having been the victim of a tick once myself, I feel for him.

Louise @roachling have you seen anything like this before ?

Yes I've seen these on lots of insects, particularly butterflies. I know the ones that latch on to the butterflies are called Trombidium breei so I assume these little red mites are different types of Trombidium, but I could be wrong.

Oh wow , you made me Google . if never seen anything like this before . it looks like it's a red spider mite. There's lots of pics of it on it's own but there is one of a mite on a spiders leg. What a spot, love it when you find something new .

@roachling Thank you Louise, I will have to keep my eyes open in future. I have seen mites on bees before, but can't remember seeing them on any insects or arachnids before.
