KIRKWALL HARBOUR- ANOTHER VIEW by markp

KIRKWALL HARBOUR- ANOTHER VIEW

There is a lot to view here, at the front from left to right, a few fishing or crabbing boats, the local lifeboat, and then the Pilot boat used to put on or take off, pilots to bring the large ships into port, they have an excellent knowledge of local tides and underwater hazards. They take control of the ships, and replace the captains, when they are on board ship.

Look closely behind the second lamp post from the left and you can just see the two cruise ships from yesterdays post. Sometimes there would be a third cruise ship visible, this would be behind the white lorries to the left of the lifeboat.

The ferries that provide the inter islands service, sail out from a quay hidden behind the buildings behind the lifeboat and tower. There is also a very large marina behind the buildings on the right of the image.

All in all a very busy port.

I like this, especially the 'traditional' boats... can't say I care that much for the cruise liners.
