Like my other Heron shot today, this one is not right either. Yes, it's an interesting image with the Heron with such a minute fish. However the out of focus bands of green, Iris plants, and the totally wrongly positioned dead plant stem across the reflection just spoil this. I knew I was in the wrong place as soon this Heron walked into my view, but I also knew that with his excellent eyesight, I couldn't try and move. I did hope he would move to the right where I had a better chance of a decent shot, but he flew off before getting that far.
You need to go to Florida where the big GBH's just stand on the beach waiting for fishermen to throw the entrails of their fish aside. I spent so much time here, at my local pond, stalking GBH's and ending up, like you, with intervening branches etc. or having the skittish birds fly off because I moved at the wrong time. Then I went to Florida and found them standing all around the beach, out in the open and willing to let me get openly quite close. made it easier to get pictures but it did take some of the challenge out of the process.
