HISTORIC HARBOUR by markp

HISTORIC HARBOUR

So are you ready for todays History lesson ?

This is the outer harbour at Amlwch Port on Anglesey. This extension was built in the 1970s to house the vessels servicing the Oil Terminal.
It was a large buoy about a mile off shore, and would have been visible from here if still present.
Oil tankers from around the world, would moor up and pump their cargo ashore, and via an underground pipeline ( 65 miles I think),to a refinery near Ellesmere Port. This was placed here to save the tankers sailing closer to unload and entering the Port of Liverpools waters. They would then be liable to hefty harbour duties on their cargo.
The older, original harbour, is to the left of this image. Despite its small size, this was at one time the busiest by gross tonnage, harbour in the world !!
Pary's mountain, a couple of miles away was a major source of copper, supplying the world.
There was, and still is also silver, gold, lead and many other valuable minerals there.
The white building is also interesting. It is the Sail Loft. Now part cafe, and exhibition centre for the museum and copper heritage centre.
Before that it was licensed and the club house for the Boat club. As it was a private club, it was allowed to open and serve alcohol on a Sunday when most of Wales was dry. It was very busy on a Sunday in particular and used to host a disco.
But you won't have been to a disco like these. !!!

The Sail loft was built a long while ago, and it was built to make sails for the sailing ships. To help this the upstairs floor slopes down hill.
They used to crane up large rolls of sailcloth through a large doorway on the side and then rolled it down the sloping floor to make it all neat and flat to make into sails.

Can you imagine holding a disco on a sloping floor ??
Everyone slowly ended up at the bottom of the room, and had to get back up to the top to start dancing again. Add to that all the spilt drinks as the tables all sloped too !!
I can tell you from experience it was crazy and would probably be banned nowadays by Elf and Hasty Rules.

Another off todays posts here.....
