Taken from Wigg Island, on the Runcorn banks of the River Mersey.
From the left of the shot, you have the old bridges, road and rail, then St Marys church sticking up. Just near that, the small white building right on the horizon is the Catalyst, a museum dedicated to the history of the local chemical industry.
Then a series of various white industrial buildings leading across to Fiddlers Ferry power Station. After the Power station you might just be able to see the temporary bridge they have constructed to help them build the new Mersey Gateway Bridge. That is what all the cranes along the river bank are for, either on construction of approach roads or the bridge itself.
You might remember I mentioned I hoped to visit quite a few islands this year, so far I am not doing very well.
This, Wigg Island is only the second one so far, don't worry I have a few more lined up soon.
Wigg Island is a large strip of land between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal. The new bridge is coming ashore on here and then off over to the main land.
Thank you very much Diane, the " Ferry Cross the Mersey" is actually about the ferry from Liverpool Pier Head over to either Birkenhead or Wallasey. However there used to be a ferry across from Widnes to Runcorn before the bridges were there. Stanley Holloway, who amongst other things was an actor, also did monologues ,one of his famous ones was Runcorn Ferry. There is a link below, which I hope will work. The Tuppence he mentions is like two cents, if you struggle with the dialect, google the lyrics. Hope you enjoy.
