When I first surprised him, this Otter was only a few feet away, but once he had spotted me, he scampered away and got into the pool. He seemed quite happy to pose, once he was in the water, if only at a safe distance.
@Cherrill I have been fortunate enough to have seen quite a few otters. Twice within just a few feet of them, like this one at first. Yes coastal Scotland can be a good hunting ground, I was on Kintyre peninsula waiting for ferry over to Arran, and was watching them in the sea. Another evening I was walking in the centre of Thurso, by a tidal stretch of the river , and right next to the bridge which carries the main road over the river and there was a pair of Otters, playing quite happily, totally oblivious to the traffic above.
Unless you want to pay for one of the local wildlife guides, best advice I can give you is find out where they live, get out there, keep your eyes open, and remember if you are quiet, and walk into the wind, they can't hear you or smell you. You just have to be lucky and spot them before they spot you.
Thank you for your advice Mark. I've loved following your travels and am quite envious of all your sightings! With limited holiday days its a choice between something like this or some time in the sun......
