While out in Anglesey last week, I had hoped to get a decent shot of one of these, and know several spots you can see them, but did not get time to try and get close to them.
These are Britain's rarest breeding Crow, the Chough, pronounced chuff. Close up they are a lovely glossy black, with bright red legs, and a long thin curved red bill. It feeds mainly on insects. In the right places, they are easily recognised by their distinctive flight and loud calls. These 6 were part of a flock of 11.
They are great birds to watch. We had a break in Anglesey a few years ago and spent ages watching them. We were also lucky enough this past January to see the Alpine Chough, with a yellow bill in the mountains above Marrakesh.
