A FLY

I do know what this is called, but can't remember as I type this, and haven't time to look it up now as I should have been somewhere else an hour ago.
Another great shot - Fav

Another great macro. I've noticed those little sort of flaps on the forehead of some flies before but have no idea what they are, or are for.

@gardencat Thanks Joanne, They are their antenna and they are mainly used as organs of smell or taste. Various different species of insect also have other uses for them as well as smell, such as for touch/ feeling, air motion, heat, or vibration/sound. Quite useful little bits really.

It looks like a Drosophila to me. Is it small (1-2 mm)?
Anyway, great capture!

I read that they are also known as fruit flies! Our fruit flies are about the size of a pin head so this is fantastic - unless your fruit flies are 10 times as big!

@scatcat @maggiemae Thank you both, it's not a fruit fly it is too large. It is about 12 mm. It has taken me a while to find it, as its not in my books, but I think it is a Thricops diaphanus.

I hope you don't expect me to pronounce that!
