I went canoeing again today, but I also wanted to get some shots of the Kingfishers that I regularly see down there. They don't seem to be as skittish as I float past as if I had been walking. I even managed to get a couple of shots with a 50mm lens a couple of weeks ago. So today I took a 300mm lens with me. I had a bit more success but although I got some really good close up views of them in the sun, the only shots I managed were when they were hidden deep in the undergrowth in the shade, hence the high ISO and resultant grain.
I think this could pay off given time and effort, and its far more fun than sitting still in a hide for hours waiting for them to come me.
