Taken from the ferry over to Isle of Iona, shortage of time and heavy rain prevented a visit to the actual Abbey. Maybe next time.
Although little remains from this time, the original Abbey was founded by St Columba in 563.
Around 1200 a group of Benedictine Monks was formed here, and it was an important place of pilgrimage till the Reformation in 1560. It fell into disuse, but is nowadays used as a place of worship again.
