The lens came with a metal ring which you can stick to your phone. Then you can put your magnetic lens on that ring. Probably you don't want that sticker-ring on the glass of an iPhone 4 so you must have a good (hard) case to stick the ring on. Also this ring will cover the flash of your iphone which is no problem while using the lens since you won't use the flash but if you are planning to use the case with the ring permanent you should cut a small piece out of ring before placing it, which is easy to do.
The iPhone 3 is a bit more problematic due to the rounding of the body I think. You will probably miss some details in your image because the lens will never be exact in front of the lens. Don't have any experience here!
