The Delft Gate was demolished brick by brick just before the war. It was to be rebuild 100 meters from it's original spot because increasing traffic made it an impediment.
Both the new building site and the stored sculptures were damaged during the bombing in 1940.
The city councel decided not to rebuild the gate and this orange steel recontruction, designed by artist Cor Kraat, was placed at the original spot fifty years later.
