Perry Sport

Perry has a long history. The first store in the Amsterdam Kalverstraat opened in 1866. It was a department store with the most exclusive and innovative products from around the world. To stay ahead of the competition, the focus shifted to the Sports and Outdoor. Over the years Perry (Sport) merged, was taken over and sold again. Among others by De Bijenkorf and Vroom & Dreesmann (V&D). The former had a very difficult time few years ago and the latter has just bankrupt. Now Perry Sport also bankrupt itself, thanks to the many shop-in-shops which they had in V&D department stores.

Funny detail I didn't know; it was Perry who introduced Monopoly to the Dutch public in 1936. Originally in the English version and later (1941) with Dutch street names where Perry had his stores, supplemented by a number of other popular shopping street names, like 'Village Street’ in the fictional 'Our Village’.

It’s a shame so many shops have a difficult time.
Long live the webshop?
It's got good symmetry. Techique54?

Interesting photo (including reflections) + info. I do like the old, independent shops with their own character, like in my home town in the Netherlands some of the shops have been there for generations, have their own style, but you see them struggle and have to compete with Blokker, Intertoys, AH, HEMA etc. It makes villages look all the same. Were we live now, quite rural, I must say, webshops are handy. In town, the few independent shops like the grocery, butcher just about survive, but are run by people who are older than the retirement age. Maybe it's my generation that find it harder. Our children don't know better and maybe they'll be thinking, that good old time of webshops when they all have a printer at home to print what and how they want it :-)

@overalvandaan Thanks for the lovely comment. I agree. Webshops are so easy and you can find everything. 'No in stock' and 'we don't sell that' do not exist anymore. But the shops in the street struggle. You mention the big players; Blokker, Intertoys, AH and HEMA... Did you know Blokker and Intertoys (same owner) are almost bankrupt too? HEMA is struggling too. Each year less revenue and tiny profit year after year.
